Exercising Existing Entitlements

Existing entitlements are exercised using the Software Request Portal (Generation 2).  When using the portal, you will be given the upgrade titles to which you are entitled (by expanding the link called "Show Current Entitlements").  Any MSL title shown may be requested for no charge.  The portal will display the phrase "(ENT)" next to the title's description (after it has been placed on the request) to show that the title being requested is due to exercising an existing entitlement.

Exercising entitlements does not require approval, regardless of how the MSL title's record has been set.  Any titles requested by exercising entitlements will be immediately approved when the final step of the portal has been completed.

When a newer version of a title is requested by exercising an entitlement, the MIE will perform the following steps:

1. The current authorization record will be modified to show that it is now an authorization for the newer version.

2. If the entitlement being exercised is not set to automatically migrate licenses, the number of license units required to cover the upgraded authorization record will be used to convert existing licenses to the newer version.  Only licenses that match the original (old) version of the MSL title will be converted.  If insufficient licenses exist to satisfy the unit count contained in the modified authorization record, then all remaining licenses will be converted.  If the entitlement being exercised has been set to automatically migrate licenses, this step will not be performed (as the licenses are already being kept migrated)

3. A record will be saved to the entitlements log to chronicle the modification of the authorization record and the converting of licenses.

Note:  No licenses will be lost, and no licenses will be gained as a result of the exercising of an entitlement.

Also note that exercising an existing entitlement is not considered a financial transaction to the MIE.  Therefore, no credit or debit record will be logged.
