Upgrades

Some publishers allow the upgrading of a license for a smaller fee than the cost of a full license.  Typically, this is done to allow moving to the most current version, and, generally, one or more previous versions are established by the publisher as necessary to determine eligibility.  For example, an Adobe Acrobat 9 license upgrade may be applicable if you currently have an Adobe Acrobat 7 or 8 license (but not 6 or lower).  Given an eligible license exists, an upgrade can be purchased to move to the desired version.  The upgrade license combines with the previous license to create one license at the new version level.

The MIE allows managing those titles that allow upgrades as an adjunct to the Managed Software List (MSL).  Upgrade titles are defined and then linked to the MSL title whose "owned" count will increment for each new upgrade license.  Additionally, eligible licenses are also defined (eligible licenses will have their "owned" counts decremented for each upgrade license).

Users who currently have one of the eligible titles authorized will be extended the ability to request an authorization for an upgrade when using the Software Request Portal (assuming sufficient underlying eligible licenses exist.)  When a user is authorized for an upgrade, the current authorization of the eligible title will be harvested and no credit will be extended (since the authorization is being consumed by the upgrade).

Given sufficient access, Managed Upgrades may be accessed as a fly-out menu item from the Managed Software left menu option.
