Linking to an ESI Master Rule

One of the settings available for a rule is the ability to link your rule to one of the ESI Master rules.  This is usually done when an ESI Master rule is copied to your customer area.  Linking allows you to continue to get any updates to the rule as ESI makes changes.

If you elect to link to an ESI Master rule, your rule will be checked for updates on the master each time Housekeeping runs. Housekeeping will also place a system lock on your rule, preventing you from making any changes (since changes will be made to the master by ESI and your rule will receive those changes).

Note:  The preferred way to use an ESI Master rule is to select it directly when assigning a rule to a specific MSL title.  That way there will be no copying of one rule to another, you will always be using the master rule directly.

Note:  Linking to a master means that the master is copied to your customer area in order to apply any updates.  Some AA functions, however, contain customer-specific parameters and those parameters are not copied.  There is a risk, depending on the rule, that your copy of the rule might have some of the parameters of some of the functions reset each time the rule is updated.  This is another reason to use the master rule directly.
