Authorization Analyzer (Complex license types)

The MIE features a rules-based Authorization Analyzer (AA) that is used to determine the number of license units required to cover a specific authorization.  The AA is generally used to calculate License Units Required (LURs) for authorizations belonging to licenses that have more complex rules, such as are found in data center software titles.

The AA is primarily used for license types that are based on the physical parameters of the machine on which the software title is loaded, whether that machine is physical or virtual.

The AA is used to calculate licenses needed for titles such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle (by Processor) titles, and any IBM titles licensed by Processor Value Units (PVUs).

AA takes into consideration such things as:

Is the machine a physical or virtual machine?

How many processors are on the machine?

How many cores?

Is Hyperthreading in use?

If so, how many virtual cores?

How may virtual machines have been created on this physical machine?

What environment is this machine operating in (dev, production, QA, DR, etc)?

Is this machine already licensed through some other authorization or license bundle?

What license restrictions exist and have any of those restrictions been broken?

Since AA is based on rules, it can handle very complex licensing scenarios.

AA works by periodically analyzing the parameters of the machine on which the MSL title has been authorized, and updating the license units required to cover the authorization.  Therefore, if any machine parameter changes in the future, such as adding processors or adding and/or removing virtual machines, AA will detect the changes, re-run the licensing rules, and update the required license units accordingly.

An AA rule is assigned by MSL title in the MSL title's settings.  AA will only run against authorizations created for MSL titles that have been set to run an AA rule.
