Portal Generations

The following defines the various generations of portals:

Generation 1 - Introduced in 2006

The first generation of the portal was designed primarily to allow requesting of up to 10 MSL titles for workstation use.  It was confined to handling only MSL titles that are authorized by device, and could handle only 10 requested titles on one request.  It supported workflow for approvals and integration with the Application Push Scheduler (APS).  The first generation portal can be identified by the word catchpoint.asp in the browser's query string.

Generation 2 - Introduced in 2011

The second generation of the portal was designed to incorporate the capabilities of the first generation, with the following enhancements:

Support for up to 20 line items per request

Server as well as workstation software

Authorizations by user as well as by device

Ability to request associated entitlements, such as software maintenance, when requesting titles.

Ability to request multiple authorizations (greater than quantity 1) for server titles and entitlements

Offering upgrade titles at no cost (based on current entitlements).  For example, if an asset is entitled to upgrade to the next version due to an existing software maintenance contract, the portal will offer the new version at no cost.

Faster than Gen 1 portal

Support for two different approval workflows:  Server versus Workstation.

The second generation portal can be identified by the word requestsoftware.aspx in the browser's query string.
