License Equivalents

License equivalents allow you to specify one MSL license that can be used to cover another MSL application's install.  This is generally used when the license for a newer version allows it to be used to cover the continued installation and use of the previous version.

License equivalents are established using the Managed Software function within Asset Management.  To access the Managed Software function, click on Master Catalog(s) on the left menu and then click on Managed Software in the sub-menu when it appears. You must have sufficient privileges to access Managed Software.

License equivalents are defined for a given MSL title by adding one or more other MSL titles to the box called "Other MSL titles that can be covered by licenses from this title".

Generally, the previous version of the current MSL title is all that might be covered.

Check your license carefully before defining any License equivalents.

How License Allocation is Affected

License equivalents will alter how licenses are allocated. License allocation will give priority to covering installs with like-for-like licenses.  For example, license allocation will first attempt to cover a Visio 2002 installation with a Visio 2002 license.  Only when no like-for-like licenses are available will the allocation strategy attempt to cover with License equivalents.

Allocation will continue to honor business constraints (see License allocation for details on constraints) for License equivalents.  If available licenses are equivalents, but are constrained, then they will only be allocated to hardware assets  or software requests meeting the constraints.

Once a License equivalent has been allocated to cover an install of a different MSL title, it will not be de-allocated and replaced with a like-for-like license should one become available in the future.  The available like-for-like license will sit in the unallocated pool until another matching request for license comes along.

License Equivalents are automatically de-allocated when future like-for-like coverage becomes available.  See Allocation Optimization.

Removing a License Equivalent

A License equivalent may be removed via the Managed Software menu option at any time.

Warning:  Extreme care should be taken when removing a license equivalent setting as this will cause all licenses allocated via that setting to be automatically de-allocated.  See Allocation Optimization.
