Aliases

Aliases allow you to specify one or more ways an auto-discovery package may spell the specific MSL title. Aliases refer to the Master Products table, which is managed via the Master Catalog(s) menu option.  The Master Catalog(s) menu option is available on the left menu of the Asset Management module home page (given proper access exists).  After selecting Master Catalog(s), a Managed Software menu option will appear on a sub-menu beneath Master Catalog(s).  To create or edit the aliases for a specific MSL title, select Managed Software to view the list of all MSL titles, and then select the specific title of interest.

The MIE uses the list of aliases when processing raw software information presented by several of the MIE's catch point screens and by imports from other auto-discovery systems.  Through the use of aliases, any number of concurrent auto-discovery methodologies may be employed.

Consolidate automatically adds new raw software entries to the Master Products catalog, resulting in the catalog's containing an unabridged list of all raw titles being discovered in the environment.  Periodically, each MSL item should have its aliases reviewed to ensure there are no new spellings that have been introduced by patch releases, or changes to the auto-discovery tools in use.

Note, aliases are how the MIE identifies installed software detected by auto-discovery.  If no aliases are defined, no rogue software discovery can take place.
