Customers Affected: Customers using ESI’s Workstation Data Assistant with ESIScan
ESIScan version 6.6
The following changes have been made to ESIScan (ESI’s auto-discovery agent):
1. ESIScan now supports ISO 19770-2 software tags.
2. Support for finding installed instances of Microsoft SQL Server.
3. Returning number of cores.
4. Returning whether hyperthreading is “on” or “off” (Wintel servers).
Analyzer rules are for managing complex license types, and now creating and modifying those rules have been made much easier.
ISO 19770 tag support
ESIScan searches the target machine for all ISO 19770 software tags and returns the installed software information found, along with the information that it has previously been returning.
Installed Instances of Microsoft SQL Server
ESIScan now contains the same SQL Server scanning logic as ESISQLScan.
That scanning logic looks for actual running instances of SQL Server and reports only those running instances (this is not based on add/remove programs or file searches – it is based on actual SQL Server-specific queries).
Cores and Hyperthreading
ESIScan now returns a count of processors, a count of cores, and a flag to indicate whether hyperthreading is turned on.
These values have been added to support ESI’s Authorization/License Analyzer capability.

Customers Affected: All
New MIE Feature
The MIE now supports role-based access control. Any number of roles can be created and any number of menu options can be assigned to each role.
Users assigned to roles will only see the menu options assigned those roles. Role-based access control is in addition to the MIE’s current level-based system.

MIE Functionality Change
The Managed Software List edit screen has been changed. The various areas for entering data are now defaulted to being collapsed. This is to shrink the screen to allow making changes more efficiently.
Click on the area heading to expand or shrink the area of interest. Shrinking the area after making an edit will not affect your edit – your changes will be saved whether or not the area is currently visible.

Graphical Workflow Designer Release 1.2.2
This is the finalization of the interim 1.1.9 released back in November. This release includes the following new features:
1. Ability to restart a thread. Choose a point in the thread’s progression and right click on the progression number and, if you have sufficient access, you will be presented with the option of restarting the thread at that point. This is very useful for threads that have terminated due to timeout or other reasons.
2. Email templates and questions can now be managed/designed directly from the GW tool (you used to have to use the MIE’s user interface for working with email templates and questions.) This allows full workflow design, edit, and management to be performed from within the GW tool.
To download this update, login to the MIE, go to Workflows, and click on the link at the top of the page. Or, if you already have the GW tool installed, simply start the tool and it will update itself.

Graphical Workflow (GW) Designer Interim Release 1.1.9
This interim release of the Graphical Workflow (GW) Designer allows users to examine individual threads, and graphically see how the thread progressed through the workflow.
This is a valuable tool in analyzing the results of any given thread, in order to answer questions like “what happened to my request?”
In addition to visually seeing how a given thread progressed, you can also hover over the step number and see actions that happened at that step. Or double click on a specific step to go to the history log and see everything, in detail, that happened on the thread.
Also shown are elapsed times: both the time spent at any given step and the total elapsed time since the start of the thread for each given step.
This is an interim release in preparation for an upcoming major release of the GW tool. The major release will also allow limited thread restarts as well as managing email templates and questions right from the GW tool.
To download this update, login to the MIE, go to Workflows, and click on the link at the top of the page. Or, if you already have the GW tool installed, simply start the tool and it will update itself.

New MIE Feature
Change to MIE Feature – Catch point screens that perform a harvest event.
A change in how a harvest event is performed has been introduced and affects all catch point screens that perform harvesting.
In the past, a harvest action performed by a catch point screen caused the authorization to be marked for harvest, however Consolidate had to run in order to finalize the harvest event (such as de-allocate any assigned licenses, managed license keys due to the de-allocation event, etc).
The change allows the harvest event to happen in its entirety in real time, when the screen is executed. This will remove any delays between the authorization being harvested, and any associated licenses being de-allocated and returned to the pool for re-allocation elsewhere.
Catch point history is still written to support audit.

New MIE Feature
Authorization Analyzer and SQL Server License Analyzer
ESI has significantly closed the gap in automating complex data center license management with our newest feature release – Authorization Analyzer.
The Analyzer is a rules-based engine that can handle very complex licensing scenarios – automatically. As a starting point, we have created all of the rules necessary to automate Microsoft’s SQL Server licensing guides for the following SQL Server titles:
SQL Server 2005, all editions.
SQL Server 2008, all editions.
SQL Server 2008 R2, all editions.
SQL Server 2012, all editions.
Although ESI is releasing the Analyzer with the rules to support Microsoft’s SQL Server Licensing guides already developed and ready to go, the Analyzer is capable of much more. It can be employed to handle practically any licensing scenario – to include very complex licensing. Rules are extensible and configurable – and available to you via the User Interface.

Optional Single Sign-on (direct integration with your domain authentication, such as Active Directory)
ESI is announcing a partnership with Ping Identity
(www.pingidentity.com)
that allows customers to opt into a single sign-on capability.
If you opt in, you will receive the following benefits:
You will no longer be challenged to login to the MIE if you have already logged in at work. When you go to the MIE, you will go right into the dashboard.
Increased security for catch point screens.
For clients employing the MIE’s catch point screen restrictions, such as IP address restrictions, single sign-on will allow you to release those restrictions and, at the same time, increase security. This will allow remote and traveling users easier access.
If you have Active Directory and/or are already employing single sign-on elsewhere within your enterprise, enabling the MIE’s single sign-on will be very straight-forward.

A significantly enhanced Software Request Portal has been released. The GEN2 Portal includes all the features of the existing Gen1, in addition it has the following features: ...
Request Entitlements - Ability to request additional entitlements, such as Microsoft Software Assurance or software maintenance, when requesting software.
GEN2 Portal manages publisher rules regarding the maximum time that can pass between ordering the software and ordering the entitlement.
Exercise Entitlements - GEN2 Portal “knows” what versions a user is entitled to based on current entitlements in force, and will allow the user to upgrade without charge via self service, thereby exercising existing entitlements.
Faster than the GEN1 Portal.
Server and Workstation Software - Support for server software requests as well as workstation software, with separate workflows to handle server/workstation requests.
Improved support for re-requesting software (usually done via self service to force a new push to re-install or remediate software issues).
Server software quantities can be adjusted up/down via the GEN2 Portal. If down, results in an automatic harvest of the excess authorizations.
Please note the new portal is partially backwards compatible with the old, and requires some ESI configuration to make it fit your needs.
